Powers of Two

When dealing with bits and other binary information, we also have the need to work with numbers that are a power of 2.

  1. 20=1
  2. 21=2
  3. 22=4
  4. 23=8
  5. 24=16
  6. 25=32
  7. 26=64
  8. 27=128
  9. 28=256
  10. 29=512
  11. 210=1024

In addition, to manage larger powers of two, prefixes are adopted:

  1. 1KB=210
  2. 1MB=220 (megabyte)
  3. 1GB=230 (gigabyte)
  4. 1TB=240 (terabyte)
  5. 1PB=250 (petabyte)
  6. 1EB=260 (exabyte)

Note that hard and SSD drive manufacturers use decimal values to state drive capacities.  For example a 1TB drive nominally holds 1012 bytes.
