Binary Codes

A binary code is a way of organizing binary information.  For our purposes here, a binary code is a fixed bit length binary string where each value is assigned to a different symbol.

Properties of Codes

The number of bits gives the number of unique symbols that can be encoded.  For example, a 4-bit code can be associated with 16 unique symbols.  An 8-bit code can be associated with 256 unique symbols.
